D2 GROUP / RESEARCH DECISION GUIDE

B2B Sales Research Handoff Playbook: from research evidence to a Sales decision

Research is wasted when a Sales team receives a spreadsheet with no reason to act. A proper handoff connects the approved ICP to an evidence-backed account dossier and a concrete next decision—not an automated outreach claim.

Direct answer

What should a Sales Research handoff contain?

A B2B Sales Research handoff should show who the company is, why it fits the agreed ICP, which observed events are relevant, what buyer/contact facts are verified, what remains unknown and what Sales should validate next. Each record also needs exclusion/duplicate status, source dates, quality disposition and a place for client feedback. The handoff transfers research context; the client retains responsibility for outreach, consent assessment, sales qualification and deal decisions unless separately agreed.

D2 treats the account dossier as an evidence record and a decision-support artifact. It is not the same as a guaranteed appointment, a pre-approved prospect or a contact file ready for bulk sending.

RESEARCH / FIELD SCOPE

Four handoff objects Sales needs

The dossier should be concise enough to review but granular enough to audit every important research conclusion.

01

Account identity and fit

Include legal company name, website, operating market, sector, parent/branch relationship, WHY_SELECTED and specific ICP/exclusion checks. Do not equate a website with a verified legal entity.

02

Signals, timing and uncertainty

Show event summary with original source and date, the seller use-case hypothesis and a separate UNKNOWN list. A news article is not confirmation of procurement timing.

03

Buyer route and contact QA

Describe purchasing function, named contact when sourced, role evidence, generic versus direct email and verification status. Missing information is visible rather than backfilled with guesses.

04

CRM readiness and feedback

Record dedup/ownership state, review status, suggested next validation question, client disposition and rejection reasons. Preserve versions for correction and follow-up research.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

Is a CSV enough for handoff?

It can be a data format, but without evidence fields, dates, QA and feedback, the team cannot confidently explain why a company was selected.

Who checks duplicates against our current customers?

The client must authorize an appropriate comparison process. D2 can research public entity relationships; only the client can confirm its full private CRM and suppression status.

Who owns the next Sales action?

The client or a separately contracted outreach team. A research brief does not grant permission for autonomous email sending.

YOUR NEXT RESEARCH DECISION

Follow the next question before commissioning research.

These related pages explain scope, evidence, QA and monthly engagement. Observed business signals are not confirmed purchase intent, and accepted research is not a booked meeting.

SCOPE / ACCEPTANCE

Design the dossier around your Sales workflow

Share the fields your team actually needs, rejection reasons and approval process. D2 can discuss a bounded research handoff without requiring sensitive CRM uploads in the public form.

Discuss a Sales research handoff

This page explains a research method and illustrative fields; it is not an outcome guarantee, quote or permission to send outreach.

EVIDENCE / INFERENCE / GAP

What belongs to Research and what belongs to Sales?

The division of responsibility prevents 'lead delivered' from being confused with 'qualified opportunity opened'.

A five-stage handoff workflow

  1. 01

    Approve the target brief

Sales confirms offer, ICP, exclusions, buyer functions, timing and practical contact needs before research begins.

  2. 02

    Deliver a source-backed dossier

D2 provides company summary, selection rationale, dated evidence, decision-route research, contact verification and unresolved GAP fields.

  3. 03

    Check CRM and ownership

The client validates net-new status, customer bans, parent–subsidiary matches and assigned Sales owner before any outreach.

  4. 04

Capture the next action and feedback

Sales marks ACCEPT/HOLD/REJECT, records why and chooses the next verification or outreach task under its own controls.

  • Buyer function, contact source, email type and verification level.
  • CRM dedup/ownership status, with UNKNOWN as an allowed unresolved state.
  • Reviewer feedback, suggested validation question and next-action owner.
