D2 GROUP / RESEARCH DECISION GUIDE

B2B Account Research Acceptance: approve, hold or reject a dossier

A Sales Research handoff is complete only when the buyer can inspect the claims, document exceptions and decide which account records are usable. Acceptance is a quality decision about research output, not an assumption that the prospect is ready to buy.

Direct answer

What makes a B2B account research dossier acceptable?

An accepted research dossier meets the written acceptance gate: identifiable company and ICP fit, sourced company and signal information, sufficient buyer-route/contact evidence for the purchased tier, checked exclusions and openly recorded gaps. HOLD means meaningful evidence is unresolved; REJECT means a mandatory criterion fails. Reasons and revisions must be attributable so both parties distinguish research quality from Sales outcomes.

D2 separates the act of delivering a record from the client's acceptance decision. An account that matches a broad industry keyword can still fail on exclusions, contactability, freshness or duplicate status.

RESEARCH / FIELD SCOPE

Four independent acceptance checks

Do not collapse different research defects into a single ambiguous 'good lead' score. Each check should have a clear threshold and documented exception.

01

Eligibility and exclusion

Verify legal entity, territory, product fit and prohibited or already-owned accounts. A company mentioned in public news is not automatically new to the client's CRM.

02

Company and signal evidence

Record source URL and observation date, distinguish event timing from publication timing, and mark whether the event truly matters for the seller's offer.

03

Buyer and contact readiness

State the buyer function, named person when available, contact source, generic-versus-direct email and verification level. Missing mandatory contact fields trigger HOLD.

04

Client decision and remediation

Provide an explicit ACCEPT/HOLD/REJECT reason, reviewer, review date, correction responsibility and re-check result. Disagreement is data for the next research batch.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

Should a record with one missing contact be rejected?

That depends on the agreed tier. If the contract requires a verified direct email, HOLD or REJECT is appropriate; if the tier allows buyer-function mapping, disclose the gap and apply that standard.

Who decides whether an account is accepted?

The client's authorized reviewer applies the agreed rubric. D2 documents its QA decision and investigates defects, but should not silently mark its own delivery as client acceptance.

Can Sales performance change an acceptance decision?

Poor reply or conversion rates do not automatically prove incorrect account research. Review the research rubric separately from message quality, offer, timing and outreach execution.

How to review research without losing feedback

  1. 01

    Freeze acceptance criteria

Confirm the ICP, target geography, exclusions, source date window, contacts and any permitted gaps in writing before the first batch.

  2. 02

    Present evidence per claim

Expose the company fit rationale, source reference/date, buyer route, contact evidence and declared UNKNOWN/HOLD fields in the handoff.

  3. 03

    Collect structured feedback

Ask the reviewer to select ACCEPT, HOLD or REJECT and specify why: duplicate, wrong segment, no verified email, weak signal or unsuitable buyer.

  4. 04

    Resolve, sign off and learn

Log corrections and resolution, preserve an audit trail, then update the brief for subsequent monthly research batches.

Review criteria

What must be visible in a review-ready handoff

  • Account identity and reason for selection tied to the client's approved brief.
  • Source references, observation dates and explicit evidence-versus-inference labeling.
  • Buyer role and contact evidence with verified, inferred or missing status.
  • Duplicate and CRM exclusion assessment, including unresolved subsidiaries.
  • Reviewer action, rejection/hold reason, correction owner and final decision date.
