B2B SALES RESEARCH / MARKET MAPPING

B2B Market Mapping & TAM Research: define a researchable account universe

A large industry directory is not a qualified addressable market. Market mapping helps Sales define which kinds of businesses can plausibly buy a specific offer, how those businesses are counted and which segments deserve deeper research.

Direct answer

What does B2B market mapping and TAM research actually deliver?

B2B market mapping defines and documents an addressable universe of company accounts for an agreed seller offer, geography and ICP. Research should specify the unit counted (for example a legal entity rather than a brand or site), segment inclusion and exclusion rules, observed source coverage, duplicate treatment and missing-data limits. A bottom-up account universe is not automatically the monetary Total Addressable Market (TAM), and neither is proof that any buyer has budget or purchase intent.

This page describes how D2 can scope research of the account universe. The Vietnam market page addresses geography-specific research feasibility, and Account Research evaluates individual companies against ICP. A market map is an input to prioritization, not a substitute for buyer/contact verification.

STRUCTURAL EXAMPLE ONLY. The categories below are hypothetical; no observed company count, real client engagement or monetary TAM estimate is represented.

Seller offer
Hypothetical warehouse-management software supplier, not a general software vendor.
Potential segment
Businesses with warehousing operations relevant to the defined product features.
Counting unit
Legal entity, with operating sites stored as attributes; parent groups reviewed separately.
Addressability filters
Approved country, industry, actual operating model, technical feasibility and existing-account exclusion.
What is not yet measured
Number of distinct qualifying entities, coverage completeness, spending potential, buyer identity and purchase timing.
Research disposition
Scope first; verify source-backed identities and exclusions, then document segment-level confidence and unknowns.

Five checkpoints from broad market to reviewable accounts

  1. 01

    Approve the five-part Intake

Agree Target, Exclusion, Buyer, Timing and Sales Reality. Record the exact seller offer, target market, non-serviceable segments and what Sales considers a useful account.

  2. 02

Specify the counted unit and segmentation

Choose whether a row represents a legal entity, site, corporate parent, distributor or another buyer unit. Define sector taxonomy, countries, size bands and explicit overlap rules.

  3. 03

    Collect and reconcile source-backed candidates

Use fit-for-purpose public or permitted datasets, record publisher and verification date, deduplicate identities, inspect parent/subsidiary relationships and mark uncertain coverage.

  4. 04

    Apply addressability and research QA

Separate theoretical relevance from serviceability and ICP qualification. Hold records when the legal identity, use case, territory or supporting source is ambiguous.

  5. 05

Deliver segment hypotheses with denominators and gaps

Report how accounts were included, excluded or held, where source coverage is partial and which segments require buyer or signal research. Do not claim a precise market total without a reproducible method.

EVIDENCE / INFERENCE / GAP

TAM, SAM and a researchable account set are not interchangeable

Market size is often expressed in revenue, while Sales needs a company set. The methodology must explain units, assumptions and uncertainties.

ConceptMeaning for a B2B sellerEvidence requirement or limitation
TAM — total addressable marketAn estimate of all theoretical demand for the offer within a defined market; may be expressed as revenueRequires a documented pricing or spend model. A list of companies alone does not establish monetary TAM.
SAM — serviceable available marketThe portion of theoretical demand reachable under actual product, territory, channel, capacity and regulatory limitsState which constraints are applied; do not count unsupported countries as serviced.
Researchable account universeDistinct companies or buying units matching a transparent research filterDefine counted unit, source dates, identity resolution, exclusions, gaps and possible coverage bias.
Sales-prioritized accountsA smaller set with ICP relevance, usable evidence and buyer hypothesesRequires record-level QA. Public event signals do not prove commercial readiness.
Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

Is the number of companies in an industry the same as TAM?

No. Company counts describe a potential account universe. Monetary TAM also needs a credible demand, spending or price model; both require documented assumptions and coverage limits.

Can a market map be used before individual buyer email research?

Yes. Mapping can clarify relevant segments first. Contact and decision-maker requirements are later qualification gates and must not be implied by account counts.

Does D2 publish a verified global TAM for my sector?

No. A market-size or international coverage claim must be evaluated from the requested scope, data provenance and geographic feasibility.

Review criteria

What should appear in a defensible market-map handoff?

  • A documented counted unit and clear difference between TAM, SAM and account counts
  • Approved seller offer, target segments, geographies and hard exclusion rules
  • Source provenance, publication/check dates and disclosure of coverage limitations
  • Legal-entity/brand/site and group-company deduplication decisions
  • A denominator with inclusion, exclusion and unresolved-review logic if counts are published
  • Segment priorities, buyer research needs, unresolved gaps and the intended Sales next decision

RESEARCH / FIELD SCOPE

The four decisions that make a market map usable

Start with a specific product, not every company in an industry. Define what can be verified before using totals in a pitch or forecast.

01

Seller offer and demand unit

Clarify the solution, buyer use case and the entity that would actually buy: legal company, operating plant, procurement group or reseller. Document why that unit matters.

02

Segmentation and coverage

Separate seller-relevant industries, subsegments, business models, geographies and operating attributes. Each segment needs traceable inclusion logic and coverage caveats.

03

Entity identity and exclusion

Normalize parent/subsidiary, brand and site identities, then apply client-owned accounts, non-serviceable companies and restricted entities with approved rules.

04

Research confidence and sales usability

Keep proven company attributes separate from inferred fit, missing buyer/contact information and observed signals. A market map can identify where deeper qualification is needed.
