Industry use case · Logistics & Freight

Find the right shippers and logistics buyers—not another generic company list.

A forwarder needs exporters and importers on the right trade lanes. A 3PL needs manufacturers or retailers that fit its operating network. Warehouse, software and equipment suppliers target different buyers. D2 researches companies around what your business actually sells, with verifiable account fit and evidence of relevant change when available.

Direct answer

How does D2 research business customers for logistics and freight providers?

D2 starts with the service you sell, target markets, exclusions and buyer functions. A freight forwarder may need shipper accounts, while a warehouse-equipment provider needs verified operators, facility owners or procurement entities. D2 checks each company's real operating model and WHY_SELECTED; investigates sourced WHY_NOW signals if included in the research depth; maps the buyer function; and records gaps rather than assuming a purchase. Named contacts and DIRECT work emails belong to separately scoped Contact Enrichment.

Your business model changes the research

Which logistics service do you sell?

A freight forwarder looking for shippers needs a different account universe from a warehouse-equipment vendor looking for 3PL operators. Select your offer to see WHO to research, WHY NOW to investigate, and which buyer functions matter.

Your service

Freight forwarding

Ocean/air freight forwarding, customs brokerage and specified trade lanes

WHO — Target Account ICP
Manufacturers, exporters and importers moving relevant products on lanes you actually serve; confirm operating and shipping entities.
WHY & WHEN — Opportunity ICP
Documented export-market entry, a new production site or changed distribution geography may justify a logistics conversation, not prove a freight-provider switch.
Relevant buyer functions
Logistics, Supply Chain, Import/Export, Procurement
Key exclusions and unknowns
Current customers, unserved lanes, freight brokers without shipper demand, inactive or duplicate entities

Research triggers worth checking

  • Announced export-market or plant expansion tied to your lanes
  • Documented distribution-network change or product export launch

How sales can use the research

Give sales a lane-fit shipper brief and reason to ask about routing requirements; do not assume contract renewal or shipment volume.

What could the first 30–60 days of research prove?

Match the service you sell to the shipment or operating decision.

This is a proposed method and acceptance checklist, not delivered client results, verified opportunities or guaranteed sales. Your exact ICP, research hours and output need a feasibility review.

Who buys D2 research — and who their sales team targets
The research buyer may sell freight forwarding, 3PL, warehousing, logistics software or equipment. TARGET accounts change with the selected offering: shippers, brands, operators or warehouse projects are not interchangeable.
What is different from a static list or AI lookup
Importer/exporter lists identify companies but not lane fit, who ships, who specifies equipment, who contracts 3PL, or whether sourcing is active. Research makes those unknowns explicit and supports a focused sales question.
Minimum evidence before suggesting contact
Match dated first-party expansion/operating evidence to the correct shipping or warehouse entity, route/site, cargo/asset constraints and procurement function. A news mention alone is not an RFQ.
When this is NOT a qualified account
Exclude unsupported trade lanes, wrong shipper/3PL entity, irrelevant cargo, already awarded packages or any assertion of a live tender without a source.

First 30 days · Test the research

01

Match service and lanes

Which routes, sites, service constraints and shipment sizes can the seller serve?

Research output to inspect: Shipper/brand/operator/equipment ICP and route-specific exclusions.

02

Test operational change

Is a dated route, channel, warehouse or systems change relevant to this offer?

Research output to inspect: Source record, entity/operating model and a clearly labeled timing gap.

03

Map contract ownership

Who owns the freight, warehouse, WMS or equipment decision?

Research output to inspect: Function map, supplier incumbent uncertainty and realistic first question.

Days 31–60 · Decide whether to continue

Refresh volatile routes and facility milestones, track research-accepted versus held accounts, and prioritize the subsegments whose operational buyer and service fit can be validated consistently.

Review with sales — acceptance checklist

  • Correct client offer versus shipper/operator/warehouse customer ICP.
  • Lane/site/product fit and source date with evidence quality or GAP recorded.
  • Actual operational buyer function separated from property owner or carrier.
  • Sales feedback on usable briefs, hours and existing-provider unknowns.

A realistic opening question

How are transport, fulfillment or warehouse system responsibilities changing as your new route or site develops?

From public example to private Client Sales Room

After D2 reviews your actual ICP and source feasibility, an authorized, expiring private link can show up to five real account briefs, capture accept/reject feedback, and display an issued proposal when one exists. There is no public sample link to another client's room.

Named-person email verification, outreach and appointment setting are separately scoped. No fixed account yield, meetings, sales pipeline or revenue is guaranteed by a research evaluation.

An evidence-first sales decision, not an invented buyer intent

What would make an account worth a sales conversation?

This is a fictional research exercise, not a live account, named buyer or evidence of a contract. Each potential account must be checked against the client's offer, approved ICP, exclusions and actual source record.

Illustrative scenario — Freight forwarding

Illustration: a manufacturer launches export sales to a destination on the forwarder's supported lane. The actual shipping company and freight decision path still need verification.

Sources we would investigate
  • Manufacturer's dated launch or export-market announcement, including operating entity
  • Products, trade lane, shipping constraints and actual logistics decision function
What could make the timing misleading?
Export activity does not prove shipment volume, an upcoming RFQ or dissatisfaction with the incumbent forwarder.
A realistic opening question
How are your freight routes and service requirements being managed as the new market develops?
Common sales concern
We already have a database of importers and exporters.
What research adds (and what it cannot)
A trade directory does not establish supported lane fit, shipping entity, sourcing timing or the buyer role. D2 checks those attributes without promising a forwarder switch.

QA decision: what D2 would keep, hold or exclude

ICP CANDIDATE

Consider for review

Correct entity and offer fit, approved exclusions passed and a relevant buyer function. WHY_NOW is recorded only when evidence actually supports it; candidate is not a proven buyer.

RESEARCH GAP

Hold uncertainty

The account may fit but public timing, buyer responsibility or source confidence is unresolved. Record NO_VERIFIED_SIGNAL, BUYER_GAP or UNKNOWN as appropriate; do not create synthetic evidence.

ICP EXCLUDED

Do not hand off

Wrong market, function, category or scope; unsupported claims, existing CRM account or a disqualifying exclusion. Reject even if an impressive news headline exists.

A real QA result requires source URLs, dates, approved criteria and reviewer checks. A 5-account private evaluation, if agreed, is different from this public fictional method. Named-person DIRECT email is only a separately scoped Contact Enrichment output.

Core: B2B Sale Research

Agreed account ICP, exclusions, WHY_SELECTED, source and verification context, available timing evidence, functional buyer map and suggested outreach angle. An account brief can be accepted without a named person or DIRECT email when Contact Enrichment is not in scope.

Optional, separately scoped

Contact Enrichment (named contacts and verified DIRECT business emails), Email Outreach and Appointment Setting. None is included automatically in research hours or promised by a sample.

What to evaluate in the first 30–60 days

Review usefulness of researched accounts with your sales team. Meetings, quotations and contracts are downstream commercial outcomes, not research acceptance criteria.

  • Correct shipper, operator or buyer entity and agreed exclusions
  • Traceable observed evidence or an explicit NO_VERIFIED_SIGNAL gap
  • Clear buyer function, approach rationale and sales-team feedback
  • Research hours, QA acceptance and account overlap with your CRM

Illustrative research hypotheses only. No claim that a company is shopping for freight, warehouse capacity, software or equipment. Up to five view-only accounts are conditional on ICP and source feasibility. Vietnam coverage is established; other geographies require a feasibility review.

When to use this service

Five different sales motions—not one logistics lead list

Freight forwarders looking for manufacturers, importers and exporters with relevant lanes and cargo context.

3PL and contract logistics providers seeking brands, distributors or retailers with compatible delivery networks.

Warehousing and fulfillment companies researching product owners with matching locations, handling and storage needs.

Logistics software and industrial solution vendors selling to actual operators, technology owners and facility buyers.

Signals & verification

Logistics opportunities differ by service—and a signal is not a purchase

Factory expansion may matter to a forwarder; a new sales channel to a 3PL; a WMS rollout to a software vendor; and a warehouse tender to an equipment supplier. L1 can establish account fit without a timing claim. L2 can return NO_VERIFIED_SIGNAL; L3 develops a sourced hypothesis with limitations, not confirmed buying intent.

A manufacturer opens an export line or new facility linked to a forwarder's actual trade lane.

A retailer or product brand expands channels or distribution geography relevant to 3PL and fulfillment.

A logistics operator recruits WMS/TMS or supply-chain systems personnel; the job ad does not prove software procurement.

A documented warehouse fit-out, capacity project or tender names a facility/operator; do not assume equipment budget or buyer authority.

Research deliverables

What a logistics account brief tells sales

01

WHO · Account ICP

Correct shipper, retailer, manufacturer, 3PL, warehouse operator or facility buyer; verified entity, location, business model, agreed exclusions and CRM overlap.

02

WHY SELECTED · Service fit

Specific reason the account may suit the client's freight lanes, outsourced logistics network, warehouse capacity or technology/equipment offer.

03

WHY & WHEN · Source-backed signals

Documented export/market expansion, site or distribution change, hiring, technology initiative or tender where relevant; source, date and counter-evidence or NO_VERIFIED_SIGNAL recorded.

04

BUYER · Sales action & QA

Relevant logistics, supply chain, operations, IT, engineering or procurement function; proposed question to validate and research QA. Verified named contacts and DIRECT email are optional Contact Enrichment.

How we research

From your logistics offer to a defensible target-account shortlist

  1. Step 1

    Start with the seller's offer

Separate forwarding, 3PL, warehousing, logistics technology and equipment businesses. Confirm lane, geography, capacity fit and exclusion rules.

  2. Step 2

    Qualify the target company

Verify shipper versus provider, actual warehouse operator versus landlord, shipping entity and target market. Exclude duplicates or companies outside scope.

  3. Step 3

    Investigate relevant change

Check dated trade, facility, channel, hiring, software or project evidence by the agreed depth. Record observed facts separately from hypotheses.

  4. Step 4

Map the buyer function and QA

Connect account fit, evidence and the problem-owner role to a useful sales approach. Identify contact gaps; verify named people/emails only in the approved Contact Enrichment scope.

What a research record looks like

Illustrative freight-forwarder account dossier — not a real sales opportunity

Client offer & ICPFreight forwarder serving selected Vietnam–international trade lanes; targeting manufacturers with relevant import/export activity and excluding existing customers.
WHO & WHY SELECTEDIllustrative operating manufacturer with export-facing products and locations matching lanes. Validate the actual shipping entity rather than treating every factory as a shipper.
WHY NOW & EVIDENCEHypothetical dated export-market expansion to investigate. Label OBSERVED only after a real source and date are checked; otherwise NO_VERIFIED_SIGNAL.
BUYER & Sales useRelevant Logistics or Import/Export function and a question about lanes, shipment operations or vendor selection; no person's identity or contract status is asserted.
QA & optional enrichmentResearch passes only agreed ICP, source and buyer-function checks. Unknown shipment volume/timing stays UNKNOWN. Named buyer and DIRECT professional email can be added with separate Contact Enrichment.

Scope and limitations

  • Vietnam is a currently supported target market for this published use case; additional geographies require a scoped source, language and buyer-coverage feasibility review.
  • A new factory, route, depot, warehouse or job advert is evidence of a change to investigate, not proof of a current logistics budget, contract expiry or decision to switch suppliers.
  • Core B2B Sale Research is not freight brokerage, bulk contact-list selling, Email Outreach or Appointment Setting. Named-person email verification is separately scoped; none of these outcomes is guaranteed.

Evidence, not promises

D2's public anonymized research/QA cohort explains how records are accepted or held. It is process evidence, not a claim that this particular industry or buyer use case has already produced customer revenue.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

If we are a freight forwarder, do you find shippers rather than other forwarders?

Yes, when your service requires shipper customers. D2 builds the ICP around exporters, importers and actual shipping organizations on your lanes; forwarders are targeted only if relevant to a separate partner or subcontractor brief.

Can D2 identify exporters planning to change a logistics provider?

D2 can verify company activity and relevant observed changes, but does not infer a vendor switch or live RFQ without specific evidence. Unknowns remain explicit.

Does every qualified account include a decision-maker's direct email?

No. Core research maps the relevant buyer function and source context. Named-person discovery and verified DIRECT business email are Contact Enrichment, priced and accepted separately.

How do we evaluate research before buying a monthly package?

After ICP and market feasibility review, D2 may provide up to five view-only account briefs. Assess ICP fit, sources, buyer path and sales feedback; output volume depends on research hours and complexity, not promised meetings.
