Open vs Target Collaboration on TikTok Shop Malaysia
Use Open Collaboration when the seller wants eligible creators to discover and consider selected products at broader scale. Use Target Collaboration when the seller wants to invite specific researched creators. Many Malaysia sellers can use both for different products, creator groups or programme stages.
Direct comparison
| Decision area | Open Collaboration | Target Collaboration | |---|---|---| | Who initiates creator selection? | Creator discovers/selects participating products | Seller identifies and invites selected creators | | Best operating job | Broad discovery and participation | Precision and priority-creator activation | | Creator research required | Useful for reviewing who engages | Important before invitations | | Product selection | Seller configures participating products | Seller selects products for invited creators | | Commission | Set as part of the collaboration offer | Set for the invited collaboration | | Samples | Can support the workflow where available | Can support selected invitations where appropriate | | Main management risk | Too many products with weak offer or poor fit | Invitations sent without enough qualification or follow-up |
Open Collaboration
Open Collaboration is TikTok Shop Affiliate's broader creator-access model.
A seller makes selected products available inside the affiliate ecosystem. Eligible creators can discover those products and decide whether they want to promote them.
Open Collaboration works best when the seller has already prepared:
- products that are ready for creator promotion;
- sensible stock availability;
- commission logic;
- sample rules where relevant;
- product information creators can understand;
- a process for reviewing creator and content activity.
“Open” should not mean “set it and forget it”. The seller still needs to decide which products belong in the programme and what to do with creators who begin engaging.
Target Collaboration
Target Collaboration is seller-initiated.
TikTok Shop Malaysia's official workflow allows sellers to identify selected creators, choose products, configure commission and add sample support where appropriate.
Target is useful when the seller has a reason to prioritise specific creators, for example:
- strong product-category fit;
- an existing creator relationship;
- a priority launch;
- a specific content archetype;
- a creator the brand wants to test deliberately;
- a need to move from broad discovery to direct invitation.
Target Collaboration becomes much more effective when the shortlist already contains the reason each creator was selected.
See Creator Recruitment.
Using both as one funnel
Open and Target do not need to compete.
A practical programme can use:
Open layer — keep selected products available for broader creator discovery.
Target layer — invite priority creators who have been specifically researched.
The seller can then compare which creator profiles and products create useful activation signals without forcing the entire programme into one mechanism.
The model can also vary by SKU. A mature product may be suitable for Open Collaboration, while a new or strategically important SKU may receive more targeted creator outreach.
Product logic comes first
Do not choose collaboration mode before deciding whether the product is ready.
Questions to answer:
- Is the listing active and accurate?
- Is stock sufficient?
- Is the price or offer appropriate for the campaign?
- Can a creator demonstrate the product clearly?
- Is the product easy to understand without a long brand explanation?
- Are product claims controlled?
- Is a sample required for credible content?
A weak product setup cannot be fixed by changing from Open to Target.
Commission and offer logic
Both models still require an offer creators can evaluate.
Commission is one input, but not the only one. Product fit, price, content opportunity, sample access and expected creator effort also matter.
D2 does not use a generic “Malaysia commission benchmark” on this page. See Affiliate Commission for current mechanics and evidence limits.
Free samples
TikTok Shop Malaysia supports Free Samples inside affiliate workflows.
Samples can reduce the creator's product-access barrier when genuine product experience is important. They should still be controlled through clear eligibility and tracking rather than treated as an automatic requirement.
A useful sample state model is:
requested → approved → shipped → received → content due → published → reviewed
See Sample Seeding.
Creator outreach and follow-up
Target Collaboration is a platform invitation mechanism, but selected creators can still have questions about the product, commercial terms, samples or deliverables.
Once a creator responds, move the collaboration into a human-managed state instead of continuing generic reminders.
See Creator Outreach.
When to reconsider the setup
Review the collaboration structure when:
- creators are discovering products but not activating;
- the wrong creator profiles are entering the programme;
- priority creators are not being directly invited;
- sample demand is high but publishing follow-through is weak;
- products in Open Collaboration are not actually campaign-ready;
- the seller is using Target invitations without a qualification reason.
The problem may be product fit, offer, creator selection or follow-up rather than the collaboration type itself.
Evidence boundary
This page explains current TikTok Shop Malaysia Open and Target Collaboration mechanics. It does not claim one model has a higher Malaysia conversion rate or creator acceptance rate because no comparable verified benchmark is used here.
